“I didn't leave because
I stopped loving you, I left because the longer I stayed the less I loved myself.” ― Rupi Kaur “Every time you tell your daughter you yell at her out of love you teach her to confuse anger with kindness which seems like a good idea till she grows up to trust men who hurt her cause they look so much like you.” ― Rupi Kaur “you tell me to quiet down cause my opinions make me less beautiful but i was not made with a fire in my belly so i could be put out i was not made with a lightness on my tongue so i could be easy to swallow i was made heavy half blade and half silk difficult to forget and not easy for the mind to follow” ― Rupi Kaur, Milk and Honey

The main and only character in this book is the author herself Rupi Kaur. She wrote this book explaining her own experiences and life events; in the form of poetry. She was 21 years old publishing this book and it was published November 4, 2014. She says in the authors response that she put blood, sweat, and tears into this book. The second character is the reader. The reader is someone between the age of living and dead. The reader is one of the most vital characters, because without the reader the words on the paper wouldn't be popularized or appreciated. The third character is society. Without societies vital role this novel wouldn't have such a strong passion. Without society there would be no conflict or inspiration. So truly Society is the biggest and most important character.
Yes, I would recommend Milk and Honey to certain people... In order to truly get a feel for the novel you have to be open minded. Because of some views that Kaur has, it might be difficult for some people to enjoy the unique collection of poems in the book.
Milk and Honey isn't just one of those book you read and instantly retain or understand the moral and lesson. No, Milk and Honey is in the eyes of the beholder. What I'm trying to say is, you have to digest and think a lot deeper than the printed words on paper. In other words Milk and Honey to me wasn't just a book it was an experience. What I learned out of reading Milk and Honey goes a lot farther then just than a text book can teach you. I learned self acceptance and a new found spark of dedication and love for poetry. I can in all honesty say Milk and honey has changed my life for the better and has inspired me to write again. And that's more than any book I have ever read has done.
The over all analysis of the theme is the recovery and expression of emotion in tones of femininity. Another important theme is the emotional strength and limitations, one can have. Rupi demonstrates these inquires by heart felt poems and hand dawn pictures. She expresses herself with tons of passion. Some communal complications that dealt touch on character vs self, character vs society, and some character vs world. From a social standpoint Rupi deals with a lot of social shame and negativity due to her particular worldly views. A certain conflict that Rupi Kaur experiences is a internal negative self conflict, but in later chapters the self conflict is overcame by advice and empowerment.
-"Rupi Kaur's first book, Milk and Honey is the poetry collection every woman needs on her nightstand or coffee table. Accompanied by her own sketches, the beautifully honest poems read like the everyday, collective experiences of today's modern woman." (Erin Spencer, Huffington Post)]
-"Rupi Kaur’s writing echoes of artistry and wisdom which is seen in the work of those that have been writing for years." (Samira Sawlani, Media Diversified) -"Rupi’s poetry is simple, relatable, gorgeous, and grounded in the everyday experiences of young women." (Rachel Grate, Hello Giggles) -"The honest words of Rupi Kaur leave you continuously wanting more as she writes with eloquence and poise. Her work will send you to past thoughts and realities you might not have known you had." (Sienna Brown, WildSpice Magazine) The book is broken up in four different chapters; The Hurting, The Loving, The Breaking, and The Healing. Each chapter has specific poems based around the criteria of the four chapters. Many are written as advice to the reader or an outlet of the emotions of Rup Kaur.
Milk and Honey was published November 4, 2014. This art/biography poetry novel is a 204 paged book about Rupi Kaur 21 years of life compressed in poems. The poems consist about the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity.
